help with atari 800 xl

Hi there thanks to all for the help given with my last problem which with your was sorted and all went well ..but need help again with atari 800xl pc and 1050 disc drive i turn on the pc which responds with ready on the tv screen ...but when i put a disc in the drive i get a beep sometimes it just runs for a short period just a whirring sound then stops and nothing happens no loading sound at all..have self tested the pc all ok just seems one is ignoring the other the drive switch is to the left hand side of pc and the drive cable is that side also ...what am i doing wrong or missing any ideas please

Try switching on the disk drive first, then inserting the disk, then booting the computer. Many commercial disks will boot this way.

It's also worth checking that the selector switch is set to #1.

Hi there thanks for your reply but have tried several different ways to get the drive to read the disc even booting pc and pressing options at the same time it did start this way when i first got these items i think the first dos in the pc was 3.0 and was told it should be 2.5 is this the cause as all i get now is a buzz when i try ti load a disk

A) You messed with the drive interface cables with the power on. This sometimes blows the CA 3086 buffer chips in the 1050 and the POKEY in the 800XL.

B) The cable is bad or the pins are tarnished/corroded.

C) the 1050's head is out of alignment from being jarred or old.

D) All your boot disks are bad.

Thanks wizbandit seems your right about fitting sio sable with power on i did this did'nt know it made any differance have looked around the net about this problem can i do anything about it now ...ficusok
