New guy needs help

Post by lost » Tue Nov 29, 2005 11:12 pm

All I am attempting to do is play the old star wars arcade game on my PC. I am running Windows XP, and I am not a programmer (have a very basic knowledge of computers). I haven't played this game since I was a kid. Can someone assist me with an easy step by step guide on how I can achieve my goal if at all possible. Thanks for any help you can provide in advance. Feel free to aim me @ poopmaster229. Thanks!

** Also, I do not own any atari consoles. Is there a way for me to just download the game and play it?

The first thing to do is to get the emulator (Atari800Win Plus) here: http://atariarea.histeria.pl/PLus/history_us.htm

Install the Windows executable version. You will need the operating system ROM files (try http://ch.twi.tudelft.nl/~sidney/atari/ ... itroms.zip). You can press ALT+R while the emulator is running to tell it where these ROM files are.

Once that's done, you can download and unzip the game ROM file from Atarimania, and just double-click it.

ok, so i download the emulator (and install the windows executable version). Then I download and unzip the ROM files. Where do I put the ROM files once I have them. Sorry, but obviously I'm not really sharp with this sort of thing. I really do appreciate your help though!

It doesn't matter too much where you put the ROM files.

I'd suggest putting them in a subfolder of the folder where you saved the emulator. As long as you know where they are, you can start the emulator, and then press ALT+R. That will open a dialog box where you can point the emulator to the files.

Then, you can either stay in the emulator, and go to the file menu, and select "autoboot image" or "load executable" (depending on the type of file), or otherwise, select the downloaded and unzipped file and just double-click it.

This will work the majority of files.

It can be a little more complicated for cassette images, but instructions are included on all of the pages of Atarimania that have .cas files for download.

Keep us posted on how you get on!

The keys to be used will vary depending on what games you're playing.

If you have a joystick attached to your PC, you can use that (via the emulator's "input" menu). That's probably the simplest way forward.

Otherwise, if you have access to the instruction manual for the game, that should tell you which keys do what. Some games require joysticks.

It's also possible to set up joystick emulation, so that keys on the PC's keyboard act just like a joystick. This is done using the "joystick" option of the emulator's "inupt" menu.
