For sale: Matterhorn cartridge by Tigervision

Post by Andre » Mon May 16, 2005 9:52 am

Hi collectors,

what I have for sale currently is nothing less than the holy grail for Atari 8-bit cartridge collectors: Matterhorn by Tigervision. There are only five carts known to exist. The cart I offer is in excellent condition and works, of course. If you are interested in purchasing the cart send me your money offer (pm), please.

Interesting. Can you (or somebody else) tell us some more about the cartridge (just out of curiosity, I'm not a buyer)? For example, it is known exactly why it's so rare?

It seems Matterhorn was finished and ready to ship just when Tiger decided to shut down its video game division (Tigervision).

To date, cartridges have only been found in Europe, probably because US dealers weren't interested in the product... or Tigervision just couldn't handle distribution anymore. On the other hand, Teldec had the rights for the German market and it was probably easier for Tigervision to just send a number of games there and not be bothered with anything else.

Another rare A8 Tigervision title is Espial (and André has that one too!). Only three of those are known to exist (AFAIK).

What Atari Frog says is correct, and, for the same reason, there are several Tigervision Atari 2600 titles that are also difficult to find (eg River Patrol).

The titles that are toughest to find are often the earliest, or the most recent.

I believe the Matterhorn that Rob Catron sold to MB is not Teldec. At least there wasn't a sticker on the back, IIRC.

Would indicate an ultra limited release in the US then

Teldec was the distributor for Germany. Btw, I also got a Springer cart that comes with Teldec Sticker.

Perhaps some vendors re-imported the cart from Europe/Germany (and removed the Teldec-Sticker)?

The guy who sold the Matterhorn cart to me found it at a flea market in the US, along with a couple of 2600 Tigervision prototypes and some released Tigervision 2600 titles.

Do you know where the cartridge was found? Where was Tigervision located?

Tigervision was based in Illinois, as is the guy who sold me the cart.

He did tell me where he'd found it, but that email was lost along with everything else on my hard disk recently.
