Using an Atari Emulator on WIndows XP- for midi I/O

Hello,
This is my first attempt to use an Atari emulator.
I want to run a program in the Atari emulator on Windows XP, which sends midi data to a synthesizer.
Is this possible from an emulator?
If so, how do I configure the emulator to send midi?
Where would the midi interface on my PC be connected?
I typically use a USB-> midi adapter under Windows XP, but the Atari's existed before USB was around. I don't know if there is a way to map midi data from the emulator to a serial port or USB.
Thanks
