Avalon Hill

Post by Atari Frog » Thu Aug 03, 2006 10:53 am

OK, let's start with Avalon Hill... Probably a lot of work here as a number of ratings seem a bit off. T is for tape and D for disk obviously. If you think any program or format is missing, please let us know and we'll add it.

Just cut and paste this list to your post and edit it accordingly if you don't agree with the assigned rarity. We'll then discuss the whole thing and change the values if we meet a consensus.

I think the tape version of this is not a 7 at this point, I've seen the tape version (complete, one still in factory shrinkwrap) twice on ebay in the last six months, both sold for under $10.00. Not that selling price is an indication of rarity, obviously.

Cheers,

No, the selling price isn't an indication of rarity, but, as you suggest, the prevalence of sealed copies might be a useful indication.

Although I've never particularly concentrated on AH, it does seem to me that quite a few games have appeared sealed on ebay in the last couple of years.

I'll have to think about the list a bit before making any more specific comments, though.

Yeah, there have been a few "dumps". There was one seller who pretty recently sold multiple copies of some games in new/sealed conditions. They're now sold out though. There was a similar run a few years ago, for some of the more common titles, by another seller who had some NIB titles available - these also found their way to eBay. They're all sold out now. Then there was the sellout of a large American collector, where basically three collectors divided the goodies up. Apart from that, any AH games are random events, they don't happen often at all.

The fact that AH games are often sealed isn't an indicator really. Most of them sold very poorly, and the few copies that do pop up now and then are often new old stock. It's actually harder to find used copies than new ones sometimes, hehe.

I have to agree: this title pops up frequently - and its rarity should be given a 5 or 6.

Also Empire of the Overmind should be a 6 (tape at least).

Maxwell Manor and Mission on Thunderhead are still available at Video 61 for reasonable prices (these game are for sale for years now!) - 5 or 6 for rarity should be fine with me.

I have never seen a Divex or Gypsy.

Are you sure they're still available, Andre? Those sales lists at Video 61 have looked the same since the 90s, hehe, I don't think they're updated very often.

Doesn't he auction off one of those games from time to time at ebay, does he?

As Deathtrap, AH is not my speciality, so I can't comment too much. But I think this is a similar case as SSI. They are games not for everyone. But those that like them, are fans. So it is very difficult to make estimates.

Jupiter Mission and the sequel are perhaps the main exception. They are probably the most popular AH titles. And it is surprising they are still rather scarce. But I don't think Jupiter Mission deserves a rarity 9. An 8 is more than enough.

Legionnaire seems more like a 6. At least for tape. I've passed on eBay bidding for two of these in the last few months only becuse I got one off eBay a few months before that.
