playing 400/800 cartridges on xl/xe

Post by jcbstein » Tue Jun 27, 2006 8:38 pm

Does anyone know if their is a utility that allows the playing of cartridges that were for the 400/800 only on an xl/xe machine. I just picked up the game Fort Apocalypse on cartridge, on ebay for $8.00 but it wont play on my 800xl and I dont want to have to set up the 800 to play 1 game.

Any suggestions will be gladly accepted.

Nice score for $8!

I don't think that you'll be able to use the cartridge directly in that way, though.

There is no "clean" solution without extra hardware.

There are software called "Translators". Their purpose is exactly to let you run programs on XL/XE machines, that otherwise will run only in 400/800 models.

But they are mainly designed for tape and disk based software. I think that some support cartridges. But you would need to insert the cartridge after loading the translator, and while power is on. As you can imagine, this is not very healthy (even when honestly, most of us did it more than once).

So the only good solution is a translator in hardware. There were a few commercial ones back in the day. And there are similar products available nowadays.

In your case, it might be much easier to get a non-cartridge version of the game.

There are switchable OS boards for the XL than can allow this to be done, but installing one of those would be a lot more trouble than just digging out your OS-B machine.

As ijor says, it's probably simplest to get the game on disk or tape, or you could just get a SIO2PC cable (which is a good investment anyway) and use disk or tape images from sites such as this.

Thanks for the information. It looks more and more like I'm going to need the SIO2PC adapter.

Yeah, a SIO2PC cable is almost a must nowadays.

Btw, I forgot to mention that those translators in hardware (switchable OS boards) are great but not perfect. Some games won't run even then.
