What is the purpose of dumps? What are they and how can they be used?

A dump is the contents of a software package, origianlly supplied on cassette, disk or cartridge. It's a file, which will allow you to run the software.

To do this, you need either an emulator (a program that will make your PC behave like an Atari computer) or an Atari computer with a device for connecting it to a PC (such as SIO2PC hardware). The latter will allow you to load games onto your Atari computer from the PC.

Ah...I see, thanks. So the emulator I need is the same as the one recommended in another post (below) entitled 8-bit emulator?

Thanks!

Yes.

Atari800Win is great if you have a Windows-based PC.

Sure...! :-) does it work on XP which is what I've got? I've tried it as per the instructions in the other forum thread (8bit Atari emulator) but I still seem to get the ROM message error. Hmmm...

Perhaps XP is not compatible... sob!

Yes, it works fine with XP.

What version are you using, and what error message do you get?

Hi- managed to get it working after all! :-) It is compatible with XP!

I tried loading Missile command rom dump which worked in so far as I got the screen but is there anyway to us the mouse to control the cursor on the screen and to use the mouse button to fire?

I'll have another look at it and let you know if I figure it out...!

Thanks!

Go to the "input" menu, move down to "mouse" and then select "trakball".

That should do the trick.

You may also have to use the "capture mouse" function.

You can also use the mouse in place of the light gun and other devices.

Glad you got it going!

Hey- just figured out the mouse bit as well! :-)

One final thing (sorry to be such a dense twit) but I can't get any sound at all.... I've messed about with the sound settings on the menu SOUND but nothing comes out... Any ideas...?

Thanks!

Have you tried the "sound options" menu?

Make sure "wave output" is selcted, and that "mute" isn't.
