Trying to find game

I am trying to find the name of an old game that I used to really enjoy. In this game, you would play against other players, and the computer. You were in a galaxy and would send ships to other planets to try and take them over. When the ships arrived at the planet, they would have a battle (which you couldn't control) for control of the planet?

Does that jog anyone's memory?

I don't think that is it. The general idea was the same though. The sequence that I remember best was when the two fleets would square off. They would shoot at each other one at a time until one fleet was wiped out. Funny sound effects too.

Do you remember anything more about the game?

Was it graphics-based, or was it predominantly text?

Joystick control or keyboard?

Disk, cassette or cartridge?

Anything else you remember might be useful.

i remmeber this one too, i remmeber there were mother ships and small fighters....... its on the tip of my tongue...
