Spy vs Spy 3 - cassette converting questions...

Post by Mr.Bacardi » Sat Mar 10, 2007 1:01 pm

I was trying to convert "Spy vs Spy 3" tape to cas format, but here I have some questions...
1) wav2cas converts the wave file but if you look at the produced "hex" file you can see some "bad" blocks.
All bad blocks seem to be empty blocks as mostly zeros are included. Is this a problem of wav2cas ? Maybe these blocks have non-standard size, which are not handled by wav2cas ?
2) the game doesn't load with fastsio on in Atariwin 4.0 :-(
BUT it loads when fastSIO is de-activated ! Well, it takes some time but it's working !
Is this a "problem" of AtariWin or won't "Spy vs Spy 3" load with fast SIO patch, I mean : does the game require original OS on real Atari hardware ?
3) it's a real pain to load the game from cassette ! loading time is more than 20 minutes ! :-)

Has anybody discovered similar problems on other games ?

Deathtrappomegranate will probably confirm the difficulties in converting a number of titles. I believe some of the Atari Smash Hits compilations proved problematic. It could be Spy vs. Spy III was one of them as well... Is this the Databyte version or the Hi Tec Software re-release? Or are they one and the same?

BTW, do you have the Mirrorsoft version of Boulder Dash by any chance?

I will have to dig out a copy of this tape.

As Atari_Frog suggests, there have been some cassettes that have not been easy to convert.

Maybe you could let me have a look at the .hex or .cas file that you have?

It's the Databyte release. I don't have the Hi-Tec version :-(

please let me know your email, then I will send you the hex & cas file.

I never tried a Databyte tape. But most Databyte disks have very wierd and incompatible copy protections. I wouldn't be surprised if the tape has a custom format, copy protection, or requires stricts timing. If so it is reasonable it would fail with the SIO patch turned on.

Note that you can always still use "Fast Forward" (F7) to make loading faster.
